What is Mind Uploading?
Mind uploading or sometimes referred to as whole brain emulation is the process of transferring or copying the consciousness, memories, etc from a brain to a separate substrate by scanning and uploading the brain. This separate substrate could be anything from a quantum computer to a new robotic-like body or to a virtual reality-simulated world.

Methods of Mind uploading
Microtome procedure is one of the most common ways. Basically, a human head is preserved by freezing or fusing with paraffin and then the brain is cut into very thin slices. In order to accurately upload the entire consciousness of a human body, slicing the brain must be done flawlessly. The act of slicing the brain has been done manually but a machine has been developed to do this more accurately and efficiently. Each slice of the brain is scanned using a high-tech computer or something of the sort. However, now there have been advances where the slices are now automatically raveled into spool like carbon-coated tape. The slices are then reconstructed as information into a different substrate.
Benefits of Mind Uploading
Once a mind is uploaded into a computer, the mind now has a computer-like intelligence and could potentially think much quicker than it did when it was just a brain in a human body. “Elizer Yudkowsky of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence predicts and calculates the potential speed of the artificial mind uploads to run about a million times faster than the average brain, which in theory could mean experiencing one year in the real world could be done in only approximately 31 seconds of real time."
Allowing humans to upload the human mind could also lead to exponential economic growth. If humans were allowed to upload their minds into a robotic humanoid body, they would be more efficient. Instead of relying on population growth to attain a larger work force, humans could just upload their minds multiple times on a computer and increase productivity.
In addition, if human's consciousness were uploaded into a virtual reality, there could be better environmental recovery. Humans would have less effect on the environment and release less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere if they are not using up energy and instead are living their life in a virtual reality.

Still skeptical about mind uploading?
The following two videos elaborate further into the concept of mind uploading. One is from the view of Ray Kurzweil, a heavy endorser of mind uploading and whole brain emulation. The other video is from a student.
They both form similiar hyptheses on mind uploading, how benefitical it will be, and how it may be achieved
