What is Transhumanism?
Transhumanism is a
movement of philosophy, culture and politics involving the evolution of the
human species through the alteration of developing technologies. It allows humans to adapt to the
ever-changing society in which we originate.
Smart drugs, virtual realities, and mind uploading are concepts that branches off of the larger term, Transhumanism. The movement of Transhumanism as it relates to these three larger topics essentially involves the alternation of one's identity or mind capacities by either ingesting a supplement, having oneself live through a virtual reality, or inserting
one’s identity and personality into a computerized substrate, a hard drive, that could possibly be saved and transferred into robotics or also placed in virtual realities. These different motions could have a dire impact on the role in human evolution.

Transhumanist: Ray Kurzweil
One major supporter of Transhumanism is Ray Kurzweil, an author, inventor and futurist. His thoughts on mind uploading include his theory known as the Ego theory. Schneider (2008) is a professional at the University of Pennsylvania, Dept. of Philosophy, and Institute for Cognitive Science and Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, who discusses this theory. Kurzweil says that the Ego theory is when “a person‘s nature is her ‘soul’ or non-physical mind, and this mind or soul can survive the death of the body” (Schneider, 2008). According to this theory, mind enhancement in general is quite related to Transhumanism in that the soul is essentially “surviving”, or enhanced,as a virtualized figment past the survival of the human body in virtual realities or as computer substrates.
